I believe we have seen barely a fraction of 1% of the potential utility that
software could provide filled by software already "invented", as you put it.
Technically nobody "needs" software. However when ROI and opportunity cost are
extremely high, it looks attractive, and sometimes the term "need" is used.
I think what you're getting at is, are there any large, unfilled software needs
out there with huge anticipated ROIs at this moment. In two words, not likely.
The software development process within an efficient market economy such as
ours ensures that this does not happen often.
I also wouldn't credit the large software companies with getting us there.
Microsoft didn't "invent" the spreadsheet, word processor or many of its other
bread and butter products. It did perfect the implementation, marketing,
support and distribution of such tools, however. The big software companies
are seldom the innovators. It is simply cheaper for them to sit back and let
others fund the R&D, then reverse engineer, match functionality, hire good
lawyers, and hope for the best, as Microsoft has done numerous times already.
