The culprit might well be 'scvhost.exe' -- (for lack of a better phrase) one
of the active sessions will decide to stop playing fair and crashes.
Check your settings in 'computer management/services'... I've had fewer
crashes since tweaking some of the relevant services settings.

I am connecting to DSL using a Cisco 675 modem on Windows 2000. After
browsing for a while (the time may vary from minutes to hours) I am
no longer able to connect to any web pages. I will receive a "page
can not be displayed error". In addition, I can not ping any IP
addresses or the Cisco router. It appears that my machine is not
recognizing the modem even though I am trained up. An immediate
solution is to reboot. However, after a while, this becomes
irritating. There must be a logical solution, however, my DSL
provider can not provide me with any answers.
