Re: [azipa] AZIPA Fees

Cindy:

First, Happy New Year, and I hope you have a year full of health, love and peace.

Here's something Ed will never tell you, but of course I will , because I'm a big-mouth:-) AZIPA has been supported by
stealthmode.com for over a year. Ed is the ultimate AZIPA volunteer, spending days and days administering AZIPA, trying
to make it right. There are alsocosts that you never think about: printing flyers, entering people's cards in the database of
the announce list, buying gas to run around town distributing those flyers, etc. Then there are human costs: time spent
finding places to meet, deposits given to those places when necessary, renting microphones, yada. Unfortunately, we've
found that you can't run a group for nothing, because there are certain hard costs that have to be paid. Those add up to
several thousand dollars a year, even in the current locations and formats.

I have never liked Club Rio as a meeting place, and as a board member, I've been trying to find a new place for over a
year. I've been a professional event planner in the past, I know a fair number of places, but when you look at them for
AZIPA, they don't work. And if they do, they're not free! That's why we're in Club Rio, and that's why the showcases with
no speakers. Club Rio has a hideous sound system, and so did Bash on Ash, and so did the Tempe Senior Center. Only
the City of Phoenix had a good place for us, and no one wanted to go there because it was downtown. The month we
went to Web Theatre cost $5,000, paid for by the Downtown Phoenix Partnership, which refused to pay again.

What are people buying? I hope they are buying the network, and the synergy of being with other technology people,
and the effort Ed and AZIPA have made to build a respected technology community here in Arizona. People have built
their own careers around AZIPA: two prominent examples might be Rob Goble, who helps numerous people on the list in
a generous and knowledgeable way, and Jonathan Keyser, who has taken it upon himself to be a real estate guru for
techies. I hope these people join the discussion (off list, please) and attest to AZIPA's value. Likewise, they add enormous
value to the group. As does everybody who answers questions about SQL, HTML, mobile carriers, etc.

Ed has agonized about charging anything for AZIPA. But $10 is about what some people spend a day for cigarettes,
wine, or parking. To spend it once a month for a valuable network of business contacts is cheap at twice the price. Every
other networking group I belong to has a dinner, a lunch, whatever, that ends up costing $50 for food you don't want.

I would love to hear your suggestions for a place to meet, and then I, who love speakers, will get us plenty of them!

Namaste,
Francine
