warning...off topic attempt at humor...delete if humorless...:-)RE: [azipa] Mobile Phone Service

Well Anne, it sounds like the "wireless alternative" that everyone has been
alluding to has finally come full cycle. But sadly, my guess is that this
new "shouting" technology that you've developed will be rendered obsolete
with the advent of sophisticated bullhorns that deliver with pinpoint
accuracy. And that technology will then be replaced by the less accurate
but longer distance smoke signals. And eventually, we'll go back to the
connection of two empty DelMonte green bean cans attached by a high speed,
high bandwidth fiber-optic string. :-)
Your dilemma did conjure up a vision of a mother standing in her living room
on her cell phone calling her daughter's cell phone, and the daughter in the
dining room while answering her phone suddenly hears her mother talking to
her from the other room and covers up the mouthpiece and shouts back saying
"Mother, please quiet down, I'm on the phone". :-)
Then that last vision spurred the thought of a family where each child has a
cell phone. And the mother needing to get in touch with her son, who had
inadvertently left his phone on the patio by the pool, dials his number from
the kitchen wall phone. Just as his phone starts to ring, she hears a phone
on the patio ringing and hangs up to go answer it. She gets halfway to the
patio and realizes that whomever was calling the phone on the patio had hung
up, so she heads back to the kitchen, angry at the rude people that call you
and hang up before you get to the phone. Of course she dials her son up
again and I think you can see where this is headed. :-) :-)

I use Alltel (it used to be Cellular One), and I have had it flake on me
occasionally. In California, the phone was on analog all the time instead
of digital, which really ate up the batteries, and I seemed to have
problems receiving calls even when the phone was on. They would instead go
to my voicemail. However, more disturbingly, last night I was in Sedona to
meet some friends, and my friend, who was calling from a Sprint PCS cell
phone, couldn't call me successfully. The connection kept getting lost
after 2 seconds or so. When I tried calling her, her phone rang abortively
but didn't connect when she answered. Fortunately I knew we were both in
Tlaquepaque so I just yelled loudly and found her. Anybody have any idea
why the phones would have problems connecting like this? I am not familiar
with other carriers, and would love to know if this is just a problem with
Alltel, or comes with the cellular territory.
